Local schools, church groups, businesses and community centres have been donating food parcels to St Mary’s homeless hostel inBangoras part of the Harvest Festival celebrations.

Food offerings have ranged from tinned, jarred and packeted foods, many of which can be heated by those vulnerable and living on the streets. Groups and individuals have also given fresh vegetables which have been used as ingredients in skill sessions with service users, delivering basic cookery lessons and demonstrating how to prepare soups and stews.

Donations began in October and remain ongoing through November. Most donations are unexpected and the hostel regularly receives visits from local people at the hostel with welcome supplies.

Kerry Jones of St Mary’s Hostel said: “During this time of year, when the weather turns cooler as Winter approaches, rough sleepers face increasing challenges under these harsh conditions. It’s very important that these people get the opportunity to eat hot foods and benefit from nutrition through fresh fruit and vegetables.

“Support such as these donations are vital for this group of vulnerable people and we’d like to thank the kindness shown by all those who have donated so far.”
