Reports of bogus callers trying to trick residents ofWearValleyout of their money have led to reassurances from housing workers in the area.
Staff from Dale & Valley Homes, which manages council homes in the area, have reassured residents that they will always carry identification and will usually have an appointment when they call.
Kath Wright, neighbourhoods manager for the company, said: “We are very concerned that people do not fall for thieves and conmen who come to their door.
“Legitimate callers, such as housing officers and people contracted by us to carry out work, will always carry identification and will not mind if you phone to check who they are before you let them in.
“It is very important that you do not let people into your home if you do not know who they are.
“Simple precautions such as locking your doors and not leaving valuables in sight can also help safeguard your property.”
Mrs Wright added: “We work closely with the police and other agencies to keep our tenants and other residents as safe as possible.
“If anyone sees anything suspicious they should report it as soon as possible so we can stop these people preying on the elderly and vulnerable.”
