Britain’s oldest housing and planning charity, the Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA),  is continuing its campaign to call for a rediscovery of Britain’s planning heritage in creating high quality, beautiful and inclusive places through the garden city principles. Having begun as the Garden Cities Association, the TCPA is delighted to announce the appointment today of a brand new position to lead this work, a Garden Cities and New Towns Expert and Advocate. Katy Lock will work with developers, investors, designers, local authorities and community groups to raise the profile of the garden city principles and their evolution to work in practice for the 21st century.

Kate Henderson, TCPA Chief Executive said:

“The TCPA is delighted to welcome Katy Lock to its team as a Garden Cities and New Towns Expert and Advocate. The TCPA is committed to promoting the development of attractive, resilient and sustainable places and where better to start this journey than to rediscover and re-imagine the high quality, collaborative and pioneering spirit of the garden cities for the 21st Century.  Katy brings 6 years experience of working at Land Use Consultants and a real commitment and enthusiasm for the garden city movement and ideals.”

Katy Lock, TCPA Garden Cities and New Towns Expert and Advocate said:

“This is a really exciting time to be joining the TCPA as it marks a resurgence in promoting the garden city ideals and principles for the present day. The garden cities offer a powerful vision of high quality and beautiful places and they continue to provide much to learn from. Indeed, our garden cities provide some of the most desirable places to live in the UK today, and of course, some of the greenest.  For example, the extensive green space in garden cities, which was intended to improve their attractiveness and the quality of life they offered, now has the added benefit of serving as a valuable tool in climate change adaptation and encouraging healthy lifestyles.”

Katy has been working as an environmental planner with Land Use Consultants for the past six years.  Her experience includes the provision of planning advice and casework, policy research, Sustainability Appraisal, Environmental Impact Assessment, green infrastructure planning, and regeneration projects. Katy has a Masters in Planning and a degree in Geography, both from the Universityof Manchester.

The TCPA is very grateful to the Lady Margaret Patterson Osborn Trust for funding this new position.
