Over 60 older people from Oldham, Tameside and Rochdale got together at the Pakistani Community Centre in Glodwick, Oldham for a day of fun and celebration to mark Older Persons Day on 1st October 2011.

Following the theme of ‘Full of Life’, the event was designed to encourage older people to stay active in later life and to raise awareness of the benefits that physical, social and mental activity brings.  An active lifestyle helps people maintain their independence, keep in touch with friends, get out and about in the community, learn new skills and have more energy and a greater zest for life.

Project officer, and organiser, Verity Mason from Regenda explained, “The annual Older Persons Day provides an opportunity for all our older residents to spend time together.  They can try some fun new activities, have a bite to eat and catch up with friends.”

To get in the spirit of the day everyone was invited to take part in a Zumba dance class, which got everyone moving and energised.  Afterwards a full buffet lunch was served and there was a chance to have a go on the Smoothie Bike, from The Ultimate Smoothie Experience, which uses pedal power to make healthy drinks.

Talented local singer Daniel Winters provided music throughout the afternoon, whilst students from Oldham College’s Beauty Department pampered residents with nail treatments and relaxing hand massages.

Having taken part in the day Pat Dilley from Second Avenue said, “I enjoyed the food, the venue was spacious, the music was very entertaining and I loved the nail painting and massage.”

Oldham’s road safety unit, the PDSA and Regenda’s Debt Advisors each had a stall to give out top tips and advice. Lucky raffle winner Kathleen Fortener from Fairthorne Grange, Tameside went home with a 19inch LCD TV and the day ended with songs by the Oldham Age Concern Choir.

Mrs Law from Grassington Drive clearly enjoyed the day, “People have kindly given their time for our welfare. I wanted to thank everyone as they have been very welcoming.” Elm Road resident Nora Simpson added, “It was really pleasurable meeting different people and engaging in conversation.”

Regenda works with communities to build a sustainable future.
