The Mayor of St. Helens joined residents of a sheltered housing scheme for a champagne celebration to mark their 20th anniversary.

Mayor, Councillor Tom Hargreaves visited Woods Court for the event, where guests were entertained by singer Susan Jay and treated to a selection of food, cakes and champagne

The party, at the Regenda run scheme, was an opportunity to celebrate Woods Court’s continued support for its residents, encouraging and enabling them to maintain their independence and their own lifestyles.

The day was also attended by Stephanie Harrison, Executive Director of Operations at Regenda and Mr Glynn Griffiths the vice chairman of Newton Rotary Club.  A blessing was also given by Reverend Hall from All Saints Parish Church.

Also in attendance at the event was 83 year old Sheila Dale, who is Woods Court’s longest resident having lived there since it opened in 1991.

Sheila said: “It has been a lovely day and very emotional. There has always been a good atmosphere since the beginning which makes living here special. We are always encouraged to get involved in activities including line dancing in the communal lounge, which I really enjoy. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else and this occasion is the perfect tribute for all the staff that have looked after us for the past 20 years.”

The scheme is managed by Violet Davis who has been scheme manager at Woods Court for 18 of the 20 years. She said: “We are so happy to be celebrating 20 years at Woods Court. Whilst a lot has changed since it first opened, the one thing that has never altered is the feel good atmosphere among our residents. Over time we have been able to encourage independent living, giving tenants the tools and environment to enjoy their life and make the most of it.”

Violet said there had been a lot of special moments over the last two decades and added: “The most memorable one for me was a wedding 11 years ago. It was a couple who had been war time sweethearts who had lost touched but met up here again and finally tied the knot, to spend their golden years together.”

The day was also a chance to celebrate the birthday of Emma Makin who had recently turned 100. She received flowers and her picture taken with the Mayor.
