Children and parents from Seacombe Square, Wirral took part in a litter pick day organised by Regenda’s neighbourhood team as part of a clean up programme for the area.
Families donned high visibility jackets and gloves and were armed with litter pickers to work with the neighbourhood team to clear rubbish from the communal areas. “During the holidays the local children asked us to organise some activities for them so we decided that it would be a good opportunity for them to take part in the clean up and learn about how dropping litter affects a community,” explained Claire Lomas, project officer at Regenda. “The clear up didn’t take very long but the kids were so enthusiastic that a few of them even asked to keep their litter-picks so that they could clear their own front garden in the future.”
The clean up programme was organised in response to feedback from residents who commented that the area was beginning to look untidy and that they had no way of getting rid of large household items which they no longer needed. Regenda’s caretakers organised for three skips to be placed at convenient locations and were also on hand to help residents load the bulkier items and make sure that nothing was left behind.
Claire continued, “The residents worked incredibly hard and the difference is amazing. Everyone has commented how much better they feel about the place where they live and we all think that it will help to tackle fly tipping in the area.”
