September saw the concluding chapter of the chase to recover a bad debt for M for Money Credit Union when Neil Campbell was sentenced at Bournemouth Magistrates Court for obtaining credit in excess of the statutory limit whilst bankrupt.

Mr. Campbell was sentenced to a jail term of 12 weeks suspended for 18 months and ordered to carry out 200 hours community service. In addition the Court ordered Mr. Campbell to pay £4,158 by way of compensation to M for Money Credit Union and a collection order has been made and the Fines Collection Officer will arrange payment.

Graham Tomlin CEO of Credit Union Solutions said.

“It has taken us five years to get justice for M for Money Credit Union and our thanks go out to the Department for Business Innovation and Skills for their work in bringing this debtor to justice.

This is not an isolated success for us last year Thamesbank Credit Union saw the benefit of £5,003 which we recovered from a former member of the credit union for a debt over 5 years old.

We now routinely and thoroughly credit check and make sure that credit union members are able to repay their loans. We can attach to benefits, wages and property and we never give up trying to recover bad debt.

Bad debtors fall into roughly two categories, “can’t pay and wont pay”. We have sympathy for the “can’t payers” and always try to arrange a schedule of payment that they can afford. “Wont payers” and crooks like Neil Campbell we chase just as hard as we possibly can to get our clients members money back.

Undoubtedly there are some of our bad debtors out there that think they have got away with it well they need to think again because we routinely revisit all of our old cases to see if we can make more progress.

One of the key facts in ensuring the success at Court was that Credit Union Solutions had kept detailed notes of the steps that we had taken in our attempts to retrieve the credit union’s cash. This often takes the form of some incredibly inventive detective work which my colleagues have become excellent in undertaking. It is always very rewarding to see our activity bear fruit and the money retrieved will be a welcome addition to M for Money’s bottom line.”
