Residents have designed their perfect home thanks to a recent Design Conference and they’re making a real difference to future housing.

Over 20 residents attended the Source Development Partnership Design Conference in Dorchester, Dorset.  Its aim - to seek the views of residents, on how to improve the design of new homes.  This was the third annual conference hosted by Source to find out what residents think of the new homes that are being developed.

The topic for this year’s conference was ‘How to improve the internal layout of new homes’. Attendees took part in 2 hour-long exercises. In the morning workshop, they reviewed previous layouts used by Source as well as house builders. The aim was to identify the key positive and negative features of each design. In the afternoon they were given the opportunity to design their ‘perfect layout’ using scaled furniture templates on floor plans. The results of these exercises will be used to develop Source standard floor patterns for use in future developments.

Part of the day was to also find out from residents what their priorities would be in terms of providing a sustainable home with a limited budget.  They were each given the equivalent of £60 to decide where to spend the money. The results will be used to inform the Source Design Brief which is used to guide contractors and consultants when designing and building new homes for Source.

Andrew Lawrie, Regional Development Manager from Spectrum Housing Group said of the event, “A really enjoyable day at which we all worked hard to find better internal layouts, one of the most important contributors towards the resident satisfaction of their new homes. This work will start a process of developing Source standard floor layouts which should help us to reach our 90% resident satisfaction target.”

Residents were also pleased with the day, with one saying, “A great day, well done to the development team(s)” and another commented “Can’t wait till next year – thanks”.

Coastline Housing Association’s scheme -The Spinnakers in Falmouth – won the award for the highest resident satisfaction scores.
