Dozens of youngsters have found a new hobby thanks to a Thai boxing club which has opened in Eldon Lane.

The Northern Fight Star Gym has received £500 from the Better Homes Better Lives fund run by Dale & Valley Homes to help buy a permanent boxing ring for the club which is open four days a week.

The club, run by Peter and Lisa McGowan, has taken over a former dance hall on the first floor of Eldon Lane WMC.

Peter said: “I used to box at another club but we couldn’t leave anything out because it was a community hall so we have come to Eldon Lane and sorted this place out.”

The club is slowly being equipped and has attracted more than 50 junior members, both boys and girls, and more than 30 adults.

Some club members have many trophies and championships to their names while others have only just started training. The club is sending members all over the country to compete in competitions.

Peter added: “We get to go places. In the last few months we have been to Manchester, Aycliffe, and we are back to Manchester on August 13th. We have a big fight coming up with 13 fighters.”

Colin Stockwell, chairman of Dale & Valley Homes, said: “Eldon Lane and places like it really need people with energy and enthusiasm who are willing to put their time into the community.

“We, and our partners at Dunelm and Gentoo, are pleased to support such a successful project and we hope it continues to grow and attract more young people.”
