Axiom welcomes HRH The Duchess of Gloucester GCVO

HRH The Duchess of Gloucester GCVO was guest of honour at Axiom Housing Association’s formal opening of its latest Extra Care Sheltered Housing Scheme at The Spinney in Eye, Peterborough.

Her Royal Highness was received by the Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire (Hugh Duberly CBE) who introduced HRH to a civic receiving line which included the High Sheriff (Richard Barnwell DL and his wife Beverly), The Rt Worshipful The Mayor of the City of Peterborough Cllr Paula Thacker MBE, Cllr Ray Dobbs Consort, Cllr Marco Cereste Leader of Peterborough City Council, Gillian Beasley Chief Executive of Peterborough City Council, Alan Lewin Chief Executive of Axiom and Ann Kemp Scheme Manager of The Spinney.

Her Royal Highness was given a guided tour of the £7.5 m facility by Alan Lewin and Ann Kemp.  During the tour she visited residents Iolanda Hannaway and Elsie Harrison in their independent flats and viewed an array of scheme facilities including a hairdressing suite, mini-shop, library/music room and cinema.

Axiom’s Chief Executive, Alan Lewin said “Today marked the journey from The Spinney being a wonderful building to becoming a real home.  We are delighted that Her Royal Highness was able to join us in this celebration”

HRH The Duchess of Gloucester GCVO unveiled a slate plaque to commemorate the event and was presented with a floral posy from Natalie Ellen from Eye Primary School.

David Fowler, Chairman of Axiom Housing Association, summed up the event by saying:

“I’m delighted at the wealth of positive feedback I received at the opening.  Every single resident I spoke to expressed their happiness with the scheme and the quality of the staff”

The Spinney is Axiom’s third Extra Care Scheme in the City and continues our progress in revolutionising the standard of housing and support for older people.
