A SOUTH Kirkby street will soon be awash with colour, thanks to leading social housing contractor Bramall Construction.

To mark the completion of major improvement work to properties in the West Street area of the village, in partnership with Chevin Housing Association, Bramall is providing each refurbished home with a decorative hanging basket.

The floral displays will be the finishing touch to the refurbishment work, which has involved the homes being stripped back to the brick shell and redesigned internally to make the living space more practical.

Other work has included new kitchen and bathroom suites, super insulation and energy-efficient ‘A’ rated heating systems.

Green-fingered residents of the refurbished homes were given the chance to customise their own hanging basket as part of a workshop delivered by Groundwork Wakefield.

Representatives from Groundwork were also on hand with useful aftercare tips to help the residents keep their baskets at their best.

Niall Knight, a local resident who took part in the workshop, said: “It’s been a fantastic day. We’ve found it really interesting and learned lots of new skills.

“The baskets are going to bring a real splash of colour to the street when they are up. They will be the perfect finishing touch to our newly improved homes.”

All plants used in the hanging baskets were supplied by ‘Growing for the Future’, a Groundwork project based at Thorne’s Park Nursery, in Wakefield, which aims to generate economic, social and environmental benefits based on the production of local plants and healthy food.

The new hanging baskets will be installed on the street in time for the final handovers in the village, due to take place in June.
