Hundreds of homes in Hendon, Sunderland have been transformed thanks to a multi-million pound improvement scheme.

Community regeneration specialist Frank Haslam Milan (FHM) North East has completed work on the £5 million Transforming Hendon project, which has seen improvements to 450 homes in the middle Hendon area.

The project, which began in 2009, has seen FHM give a facelift to twelve streets by improving the fronts of properties and enhancing the general appearances of the area.

Andrea Scollen, Community Liaison Manager for FHM, said: “This has been a fantastic project for the whole community.

“Tenants have been delighted with the work we have done. It has transformed the area and given Hendon a new lease of life.”

FHM carried out assessments on each property to see what needed to be done to bring the homes up to modern standards.

The scale of the work included repairing or replacing hundreds of windows, doors, walls, roofs, gutters, chimney stacks, street signs, fences and gates.

The Transforming Hendon project was run by Back on the Map, the £54 million New Deal for Communities regeneration programme for the Hendon and East End areas of Sunderland.

Stephen Croft, Housing Manager at Back on the Map, said: “Transforming Hendon has turned back the years in Middle Hendon by refurbishing hundreds of homes to their former glory and, by replacing old or missing walls and railings, has recreated the heritage street scene.

“The project has been carried out after extensive consultation with residents who now see that the uplifted area they wanted has a sustainable future. The project has been very well received by local residents and has given a new lease of life to the area.”
