Even the rain did not dampen spirits as Community Gateway Association (CGA) “broke” the ground that will see 25 new social homes built in Preston.
The Crummock Road development in the east of the city is the associations first new build project.
With support from CGA, local residents completed a community option study, which resulted in the demolition of the flats originally on the site in 2007.
Since then consultation has taken place with the local community on a number of ideas to redevelop the site.
CGA worked in partnership with Adactus to apply for funding. The £2.7m scheme is supported by an investment of £1.239m from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA).
Bramall Construction was successful in tendering to complete the build and architects ARK have designed an innovative layout that will create family homes in a style that will make the area stand out from the crowd.
Rose Kinsella Chair of the CGA Board dug the first piece of land out at the site and told local residents, tenant board members and councilors it was a “dream” to be at the start of the something so special.
She continued to say, “It might be raining here today but the sun is shining inside me, I never thought this day would happen. I am proud to be able to start the building work that will provide much needed social housing to families in Preston”
The homes will be ready to in late 2011 and more information is available at the CGA website www.communitygateway.co.uk
