One in three people are planning to retire to towns and cities rather than traditional areas such as the seaside, according to research today.
A survey of 850 adults showed that urban areas were becoming increasingly popular among people wanting to remain active after stopping work.
London, Brighton, Leeds and Manchester were among the most popular destinations, although Cornwall featured strongly as an area people would want to retire to, the study revealed.
Jane Ashcroft, chief executive of housing and care provider Anchor, which conducted the survey, said: "The study shows that we have a new wave of increasingly active and ambitious retirees. Retirement is seen more and more as a time to reward ourselves and take advantage of ever advancing facilities."
