An exciting 'Community Hub' has been officially opened at a new housing scheme on Grange Road, Newark by the Town Mayor Councillor A Roberts.
Nottingham Community Housing Association (NCHA) has received funding from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) to build 66 affordable homes. Built on the site of what was a former college, this development will provide much needed affordable housing in Newark.
In an innovative way to help aid neighbourhood integration and create sustainability, NCHA has worked with Newark and Sherwood District Council (NSDC) to create a community building called The Hub within the site which will remain for a trial period of up to six months.
The Hub will allow new and existing residents of Grange Road access to information and advice from a variety of organisations. A programme of workshops and drop-in sessions has been devised, and includes visits from the Citizens Advice Bureau, Women's Aid, local benefits departments and parent's groups, to name but a few. By offering these opportunities, NCHA and NSDC are hoping that the newly formed community will become settled in their new homes and create a sustainable future for the area.
Ian Penn, Community Housing Officer for Newark and Sherwood District Council said "There is a massive need for affordable housing in the Newark area, which is why it is so important that this new estate at Grange Road is successful and integrates into the existing neighbourhood. The Hub will play a huge part in making sure that happens. Small-scale changes to an individual can ultimately create benefits that will effect the whole estate."
A Halloween Party arranged by NCHA for tenants, local residents and their families followed the official opening ceremony.
Heidi Bagrie, a tenant from the new estate commented on the afternoon's events "It's been brilliant for the kids and adults to get together at The Hub, and I really hope there are more events like this planned for the future".
