A much loved resident of a sheltered housing scheme in Chelmsford, Essex, has celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends.

Mrs Vera Tolman, a resident of Whitefield Court – managed by Sanctuary Housing – enjoyed a quiet get-together at home alongside husband Alfred.  The couple have lived at Whitefield Court longer than any other residents, having moved into the scheme in 1986.

In addition to a telegram from the Queen, the birthday girl also received gifts from friends at Whitefield Court and a bouquet of flowers presented by scheme manager, Patricia Nkomo.

Patricia said: “Vera is such a lovely lady is great fun to be around.  She really enjoyed her birthday and seeing her family.  Understandably, she was especially proud of her telegram.”

When asked what his wife’s secret to a long life was, Mr Tolman said: “Having a toy boy, as I am a few years younger than her.  She also likes the occasional glass of sherry.”
