An apprentice plumber working as part of a scheme to improve council houses across Hull has shown that his chosen career is more than just a pipe dream after being named Student of the Year at a recent awards ceremony.
Gary Crooks, 23 of Bilton Grange, received the award at The School of Construction and the Built Environment annual awards held at the Royal Hotel in Hull. Gary was named Student of the Year on a level 3 plumbing course at Hull College after the panel of judges were impressed with his performance in examinations, completion of portfolios, level of engagement in lessons, levels of competence in practical assessments and completion of practical assignments; as well as attendance, punctuality and his excellent attitude towards his chosen career.
Ron Pashly, plumbing level 3 tutor and curriculum leader at Hull College, said: “Gary has many attributes that set him apart from other students but his greatest strength is his keenness to learn and his willingness to engage in learning activities, not only at college but also in the workplace. He had the highest attendance rate in the class and his level of preparation ensured success at passing most exams at the first time of asking and I would like to congratulate him on receiving this well deserved award.”
Currently in his third year of a plumbing apprenticeship with Connaught Partnership Ltd, Gary is currently working with Connaught as part of the team improving Hull City Council properties to a lettable standard. Steve Proctor, Connaught Maintenance Manager, said: “Connaught is committed to investing in the local workforce whenever possible and we are delighted to see one of our local apprentices pick up this prestigious award. We are very pleased with Garry’s progress and has shown an excellent attitude both at college and when working in Hull City Council properties and if he continues in this manner I’m sure he will enjoy a very successful career.”
A Hull City Council spokesperson said: “It is very encouraging to see the apprenticeship scheme working so well and we are delighted with Gary’s success following his time with Connaught.”
Hull City Council and Connaught are working in partnership to deliver improvements, repairs and maintenance to properties across the West, Wyke and Northern areas of the city.
