Residents at St Chad's
Residents in Whitleigh, Plymouth, celebrated the opening of 38 new homes and a new church for the community.
The homes and St Chad’s church were built by Sarsen Housing Association in partnership with the Church of England and Plymouth City Council. Through the partnership, run-down churches are replaced with new homes and a modern church. Since 2003, 154 homes have been built.
Local youngsters, representatives from Whitleigh children’s centre and the community police team joined in the fun at the community event, which included a falcon display and caricature artist.
Resident Kylie Critchley, said: "It was a brilliant afternoon, full of information and fun. The food was lovely and my little boy really loved the falcon."
Plymouth councillor Jonathan Drean said: “The new homes and church will be a pleasant improvement to the community. It’s great to see local residents making friends with their neighbours. The area now has a real community feel to it.”
The £5million development has five houses and 23 apartments for rent and another 10 apartments for shared ownership.
A social housing grant of nearly £2.3Million from the Homes and Communities Agency and a £50,000 grant from Plymouth City Council helped pay for the new homes.
