Elderly residents and staff from Rowan Lodge, a Sanctuary Housing sheltered scheme in Hull, demonstrated their support of a major National Housing Federation Campaign - Care and Support Awareness (CASA) month - by holding an open day at their scheme.

Through CASA month, the National Housing Federation aims to raise awareness of the 12,000 services running throughout the North that help nearly 166,000 of the most vulnerable people enjoy independent and fulfilled lives.

Services provided range from foyers for young people, temporary accommodation for families, refuges for people fleeing domestic violence and sheltered and extra care housing for older or disabled people.

The event was officially opened by the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Kingston-upon Hull City Council, Councillor David Gemmell OBE and Moira Gemmell, and representatives from Age UK, Humberside Police Force, Humberside Fire and Rescue Service and Hull and East Yorkshire Credit Union were on hand to speak to visitors about the services they provide in the region.

Rowan Lodge residents also set up traditional summer fete stalls for people to enjoy, including a tombola, raffle, cake and book stall, and their efforts helped raise £450 which will be used by the scheme’s residents association to fund future activities.

Wendy Banks, Sanctuary’s Regional Manager for the North, said: “CASA month is a fantastic campaign that highlights the importance of funding for housing support and the difference it makes to people’s lives so we were delighted to show our support. There was a fantastic turnout on the day and the event also allowed residents to learn more about the services available to them in their local community.”

Cllr David Gemmell OBE commented: “It was a pleasure to see so many people attending and even a shower or two didn't keep them away.   We were made to feel really welcome and enjoyed meeting the residents and their families.  The event will certainly remain a highlight of our civic year.”
