Pupils at Longmead Primary School in Tonbridge learnt that while cycling is healthy and fun it’s important to know how to do it safely, thanks to new sponsorship from Russet.

The children took part in Bikeability - the Cycling Proficiency Test for the 21st century, designed to give the next generation the skills and confidence to ride their bikes on today's roads.

Part of Circle Anglia, Russet - the largest provider of social housing in Tonbridge and Malling – bought helmets and two bicycles so that children who did not have a bike of their own could still take part. They also funded the course with help from Longmead Residents Association.

The children learnt how to be fully in control of their bike at all times and how sharing road space is an essential skill for all road users from drivers to pedestrians. They were also taught how to maintain and look after their bikes to make sure they are safe to ride to help prevent accidents and prolong the life of their bike.

Ivanna Roberts-Cillia, Head of Housing at Russet, said: “As the borough’s leading landlord we feel a responsibility to raise awareness of safety within the community. We believe by teaching children to learn the importance of cycling safely and responsibly in the neighbourhood it may save them from having an accident and think about others when cycling. And of course it’s a great way to stay fit and healthy.”
