A smashing time
Devizes youngsters had a smashing time, learning to box at the ABC Boxing Club in Trowbridge.
Sarsen Housing Association teamed up with the boxing club to
give the youngsters aged nine to 15 a taste of the big ring on a
four-week training course.
The youngsters learnt how to jab, punch, weave and block under the
watchful eye of professional boxing coach Tim Iljazi. Tim said:
“Boxing is a great way for youngsters to keep fit and have
fun. It’s not all about throwing punches, there’s a lot
of fitness training, including skipping and circuit training. It
also teaches youngsters self-discipline and respect for others.
Twelve-year-old Jacob Clarke was one of the youngsters who took part. He said: “I really enjoyed the boxing. It’s hard work and you have to learn to control yourself and not just hit out.”
Sarsen has donated £500 to help pay for new gym equipment
at the boxing club, including a new rowing machine, exercise bike
and punch bag. Sarsen’s £10,000 community chest fund
helps pays for projects and activities that benefit local
communities.
The boxing sessions were part of a line-up of free summer
activities organised with Wiltshire Council to help beat school
holiday boredom. Other events included kwik cricket, football and
frisbee at Pewsey Sports Centre and play sessions in Devizes and
Ludgershall.
