Barnet Council together with Barnet Homes and its property services partner the Apollo Group have been shortlisted in the low energy social housing project of the year category of The Sustainable Housing Awards 2009, organised by Inside Housing magazine.
This awards scheme focuses on the best “green” social housing projects constructed in the UK, and the organisations responsible for them. The trophies will be presented at a suitably “eco” awards ceremony at the Hilton Hotel in London’s Park Lane on Friday 23rd October.
Ted Stevens, Inside Housing’s events director and the organiser of the awards said: “We’ve had a terrific response, with hundreds of entries and Barnet and Apollo have done brilliantly to get shortlisted from such a huge field. Britain is leading the way on sustainable housing and innovative building techniques so we’re delighted we’re able to organise a ceremony to reward that organisations that are delivering best practice”.
Tracey Lees, Chief Executive of Barnet Homes, said: “We recognise improving energy efficiency to reducing carbon emissions is one of the most important tasks for us. Councils, ALMOs and housing associations can play a major role at local level to tackle climate change.
“I’m delighted that the Eco House developed with our partners has been shortlisted.
“We will be using our Eco House to assess future energy efficiency measures to create greener homes for the 21st century.”
Rob McGregor, Chief Executive of the Apollo Group, said: “The Barnet Eco Home is proof that the vision of low carbon living can be turned into a reality. Apollo’s approach to sustainability is to focus on well-proven, practical solutions to making homes more energy efficient and we’re delighted this has been recognised with this nomination.”
Last year nearly 500 people attended the event, which was hosted by green campaigner, comedian and impersonator Alistair McGowan.
The sponsors of the awards include eps, United House, Axis, Sitex Orbis, Tarmac, Profile 22 and NHBC.
