A new art club started by residents living at Frome Court in Tonbridge is helping older people aged between 60 – 97 years to brush up their artistic talents and learn new creative skills.

Set up ten weeks ago with the help and support of Invicta Telecare’s scheme manager, Sherrie Macklin, the art club has become so popular it now attracts many local residents living outside of the scheme.

Part of Circle Anglia, Invicta Telecare manages 11 sheltered housing schemes owned by Russet Homes, including Frome Court, providing a range of support to vulnerable and older people across Tonbridge and Malling.

Sherrie Macklin said: “Many of the residents had never painted before and have been amazed at what they are capable of. They quickly got to grips with the different brushes and paints just by watching and picking up tips from more experienced painters. It is something that everyone can join in, even those with mobility problems or poor eyesight. One lady who finds it difficult to see manages to colour in with the help of images outlined in extra bold ink.”

Art materials including canvas and paints are paid by money raising activities at the scheme such as tea and lunch clubs. Residents are now keen to find the cash to buy easels and additional art materials so they can advance their artistic skills and hold the club in the scheme garden during the summer.

Sherrie continued: “I am so proud of what the residents have achieved, its lovely to see them supporting and encouraging one another. By extending the art club to the wider community means they are meeting and making new friends and everyone is certainly having fun whether they have discovered a new hidden talent or simply finding it therapeutic and relaxing.”
