A 135-home development built on a former industrial site in Tipton has been shortlisted for a national housing award.

Neptune Park has been nominated for Best RSL (Registered Social Landlord) Led Large Development at the Affordable Home Ownership Awards 2008.

The innovative and large scale development, for Matrix Housing by Accord Housing Association, is made up of 3 separate sites off Sedgley Road West and is in close proximity to Neptune Park Health Centre and a range of other local facilities.

Parts of the Neptune Park development were built on the sites of redundant factories including a former chicken processing factory and a former timber yard.

Neptune Park 1, on the corner of Sedgley Road West and High Street, is a mix of one and two bedroom apartments for the over-55s called Swallow Fields. Some of these apartments are still available to purchase.

Swallow Fields is designed to allow older people to live independently and has a Lifestyle Co-ordinator who promotes residents’ health and wellbeing, a library lounge and emergency alarms for assistance.

It is also part of the wider Tipton Extra Care Village which links a number of schemes and older people in the area.

Neptune Park 2 and 3, situated on Chapel Street, Bell Street and Kingfisher Way off Sedgley Road West, are a mix of houses and apartments which residents were able to rent or buy on completion last March.

All three sites demonstrate the highest standards of design to meet the “Building for Life” Gold Standard.

Sara Woodall, Housing Services Director at Accord, said: “Accord is extremely proud of the Neptune Park development so to be nominated for this award is the icing on the cake!

“Neptune Park has rejuvenated this area of Tipton. It has brought in a younger population as well as providing care and support needs for the older generation.

“The Neptune development is a great example of how Accord’s innovative approach to housing and our commitment to communities is delivering new and better homes and care.”

The Affordable Home Ownership Awards 2008 will be held in the Victoria Park Plaza Hotel, London, on 4th September 2008.
