A new house that was meant to match existing terrace properties in a London street will have to come down after builders ignored the terms of their planning permission.

Wandsworth Council had given permission for a three-storey house on empty land adjoining 177 Battersea Bridge Road.

At the front it would have had two windows on the first and second floors in keeping with the local style. The side would be curved.

Instead the developer erected a house with three windows at each level on the front elevation and square corners.

A gantry has been added on the top floor to service an advertisement hoarding on the flank wall of 177 Battersea Bridge Road to be visible. This display is the subject of separate enforcement action.

Planning applications chairman Leslie McDonnell said: "This new building should have tidied up the street scene here. Instead the builder has put up something that is completely out of keeping with the style of properties in the conservation area.

"When a planning consent is blatantly disregarded the council has no choice but to make sure the damage is put right."

The committee's decision to order enforcement action means the building will now have to be removed.
