Jennie George, Refugee Outreach Officer for Axiom, was honoured today by donning the Mayor of Peterborough's regalia to become 'Mayor for the Day'!

Jennie, who attended the Town Hall for the purposes of Refugee Week, was taken aback when asked to become Mayor for the Day.

Jennier who is Axiom's Refugee Outreach Officer is very interested and keen to get involved in issues surrounding Refugees across the city. As it's Refugee Week, Jennie decided to attend the event at Peterborough Town Hall with Debbie Wetherington, student with Axiom.

The purpose of Refugee Week is to deliver positive educational mesages that counter fear, ignorance and negative stereotypes of refugees through arts, cultural and educational events that celebrate contribution of refugees to the UK and promote understanding about the reasons why people seek sanctuary.

The very first Refugee Week was held back in 1998 and was created in response to the increasingly negative perceptions held by the general public in Britain of refugees and asylum seekers.

During 2007 over 400 events took place across the UK organised by charities, local government and small community organisations including schools, churches, arts organisations, day centres, regional and national consortiums amongst many others.

Jennie George, Axiom Refugee Outreach Officer, said

"I was staggered when asked to be Mayor for the day. I was delighted to be asked and took on the mantle of Mayor for the day with great reverence"

"Now I'm back at my desk, I keep reflecting on the experience and can't quite believe what happened to me".

"My job involves so many different situations that face asylum and refugees across the city; I offer social and support needs to those who require help."

"I would like to thank Peterborough City Council for giving me this opportunity".
