Is online bingo bad for your health?
Published by D Brown for Brett Janes in Health
While it seems that there is an ever increasing list of things which could be bad for your health, often these are things we consume or fail to consume. Occasionally they include environmental factors or a lack of exercise, but could it be possible that playing even an innocuous-seeming game could be damaging to your wellbeing?
A sight for sore eyes
Anyone who uses a computer screen or other display unit could find themselves suffering from eye strain or a degree of tiredness which makes them feel fatigued. Blurred vision and sore eyes are often considered a symptom of excessive screen time, but avid computer users can mitigate their symptoms by taking regular breaks from looking at the screen and resting their eyes if they start to feel sore. Because these potential symptoms are not limited to those playing bingo, it cannot be considered a direct side effect of playing online, but the advice applies to anyone who might be playing any online game for long periods of time.
While it may seem harmless in comparison to some of the games played for higher stakes, playing online bingo is essentially gambling. Although many people are able to play such games online without ever feeling any compulsion to do so, gambling addiction is a serious problem and should not be overlooked simply because the game played does not seem as addictive as some other forms of online gaming. Anyone who is concerned about the frequency with which they play a game online should seek help from trained professionals, even if they are winning overall or even play games where no real money is wagered. Feeling panicky if you are away from your computer, finding yourself unable to set yourself limits on playing time or the amount you wager could be the first symptoms of an addiction, but there is plenty of support for anyone who wants help to cut down on their gaming time.
Prolonged periods sat at the computer can contribute to an unhealthy lifestyle if no exercise is incorporated into your daily routine. A sedentary lifestyle has been identified as one of the contributory factors to a number of associated health problems such as heart disease, weight gain and could even contribute to mental health problems such as depression and anxiety. While online bingo is not any better or worse than any other online activity which leads a person to spend most of their time sitting still, trying to spend more time on your feet and moving around could help your long-term health and contribute to an overall feeling of wellbeing.
Lucky for some
Although there are plenty of potentially negative effects of playing any game online for extended periods, there is no reason why one particular game such as bingo should be any more damaging to one's health than any other. Keeping active, avoiding straining your eyes and being aware of the time you spend gaming are all beneficial to your health, so bearing that all in mind should help you to overcome any ill effects. In fact there is some evidence to suggest that playing games such as bingo which engage the mind can diminish the negative effects of ageing on the speed of your mental faculties.
