Sanctuary helping to support carers

A Weston-super-Mare care home is inviting local people, who look after others in their own homes, through its doors for the day to help raise the awareness of carers in the community.
The free event, called ‘Care Awareness in Winter’ has been organised by Sanctuary Care’s Beach Lawns Care Home in partnership with the charity Crossroads for Carers who offer free advice and support for those who care for others and will take place at the home on Thursday, 15th December, from 11am.
The day will give carers an opportunity to relax and chat with other people who share similar experiences as well as hear from Jenny Murphy from Crossroads who will speak about the work they do as well as the support that is available to carers in the community.
The Beach Road home will be laying on lunch along with warm mince pies and mulled wine in the afternoon and special guests including former Mayor of Weston, Councillor Philip Judd, whose mother is a resident at Beach Lawns, as well as the town’s current Mayor, Councillor Cyril King will be invited to meet carers and learn more about the work of Crossroads.
Demelza James, manager of Beach Lawns, said: “At a care home such as ours we have the facilities and resources to meet the very broad range of specialist needs that our residents may have.
“This event is designed to ensure that those who care for loved ones in their own homes, without such facilities, are aware of all of the support that is available to them. It also gives carers a chance to meet others in a similar situation, offering an opportunity to make new friends with experience of caring who can offer support and advice as well.”
Jenny Murphy, from Crossroads for Carers, added: “We’re so pleased to have been able to arrange this event with Sanctuary. The work of people who care for loved ones in their own homes often goes unseen so this is a great opportunity to get them together. It also allows them to see that there are other people in the same boat and that there is help and support out there if they need it.”
Anyone who is interested in attending the event or would like more information should contact Ria Gilliani at Beach Lawns Care Home on 01934 629578.
