Sir Jimmy Savile's hometown flat attacked

The hometown flat of the late entertainer Sir Jimmy Savile has been attacked by vandals.

A plaque on the wall of the premises in Scarborough has been removed after the words "rapist" and "paedophile" were scrawled on to it.

Sir Jimmy, who died last year, has become the focus of a media frenzy after allegations that he committed a string of sexual assaults against young girls have emerged.

North Yorkshire Police have urged people to come forward with information regarding the vandalism. In a statement they said: "We would ask people that even if emotions are running high, not to engage in any criminal acts as they will be dealt with in the same way as any other criminal activity."

One resident of the flats, Richard Tolson, told the BBC: "With all the media coverage the interest has been drawn to the flats here and it is unwanted.

"Until things settle down the plaque should come down. People are vulnerable here and want it down."
