The UK’s first social housing provider co-owned by tenants and employees is in the market for a special of ruler, after launching a major project to measure its carbon footprint.

Rochdale Boroughwide Housing's (RBH) 14,000 homes will be independently assessed under the SHIFT (Sustainable Homes Index For Tomorrow) scheme and become part of a network of organisations which manage over one million homes around the country.

RBH says joining SHIFT is a key part of its commitment to helping its tenants and employees to reduce their carbon footprint and save money.

The society has already pledged its backing to Greater Manchester’s carbon literacy scheme, which is aiming to significantly improve the area’s environmental performance.

RBH chief executive Gareth Swarbrick said: “We are looking forward to working with SHIFT to help residents, employees and the community.

“There are lots of practical steps people can take in their daily lives that will save them money as well as helping the environment.”

SHIFT was developed with the support of the Homes and Communities Agency, WWF, the Mayor of London and the UK Green Building Council, and is formally recognised by the Department for Energy and Climate Change and the Chartered Institute of Housing.

Andrew Eagles, Managing Director of Sustainable Homes, which administers the scheme, said: “We are delighted to welcome Rochdale Boroughwide Housing to SHIFT. SHIFT’s growth over the years is very encouraging and demonstrates the positive impact being realised by the sector. Rochdale Boroughwide Housing have demonstrated their commitment to sustainability and we are excited to assist them in furthering their impact on their operations, residents and the environment.”
