Philanthropic research wins Institute of Fundraising award 2013

The University of Leicester has won a top national award for prospect research innovation using the social media platform LinkedIn.
Prospect research involves identifying potential supporters for an organisation, and the University’s unique approach utilising LinkedIn to connect with its former students won the ‘Prospect Research Innovation’ category at the annual national awards.
Delegates from the University’s Development and Alumni Relations Office attended the Institute of Fundraising – Researchers in Fundraising Awards earlier this month to collect the award for their LinkedIn Lead Generation Project.
The organisers said: “This award recognises an innovative piece of research that has broken new ground in terms of prospect research technique, raising the profile and standards of prospect research in the UK in an innovative way.”
Using the business-orientated social media platform, the University’s Prospect Researchers were able to identify and arrange meetings with high achieving graduates previously out of touch with the University. LinkedIn enabled the researchers to identify alumni beyond their networks and reconnect with them, often for the first time since they graduated from the University.
Steve O’Connor, Director of Development and Alumni Relations said: “This award reflects our innovative approach and we are proud to be the very first recipients of the Institute of Fundraising Prospect Research Innovation award. It is especially gratifying given the strong competition in the category the leading charities and institutions.
“The philanthropic support of our donors and benefactors is critical in tackling some of the major global challenges and attracting more people to support the cause will ensure the University continues to grow and flourish.”
This award is the latest in a string of accolades for the Development and Alumni Relations team, who earlier this year won silver at the Heist awards for ‘Best Alumni and Fundraising Campaign’ and the prestigious ‘Outstanding Fundraising Initiative’ award at the Times Higher Education Leadership and Management Awards.
