LHT helps school create a jubilee wood

A Merseyside school is creating its very own Jubilee wood to celebrate the Queen’s 60 years on the throne.

St Cleopas Church of England Primary School, in Toxteth, planted 30 trees in its grounds this month with help from students, parents, teachers and staff from Liverpool Housing Trust’s regeneration team.

The willow, apple and pear trees will grow in the school grounds and provide shelter and shade to an outdoor grassed area where children learn and play in dry weather.

Teacher Neil Ralston said: “The children loved helping to plant the trees and it’s nice for them to see the connection between the fruit they see in the supermarket and the fruit trees they helped plant.

“We’ll be using the wooded area for storytelling and teaching. It’ll be a lovely place for the children to sit although it will be a few years before the trees are fully grown.”

The Jubilee Woods project will see six million trees planted across the UK this year.

Lisa Bedding, LHT regeneration team leader, was one of the helpers planting trees at the school and worked alongside 11-year-old pupil Sophie Maye Beck.

She said: “"LHT are proud to help out with this project, it's been a fun day and helping the children plant trees which will be there for years to come is a really nice way to celebrate the Jubilee year!"
