Stroma recently carried out a building air leakage demonstration for the children at St. Joseph’s School in Castleford, to teach them about the importance of energy efficiency in buildings.

Air leakage testing body Stroma carried out the demonstration for year four and the Eco Team, a group of children serving as representatives for the school’s energy efficiency efforts. Stroma showed how heat escapes through gaps and imperfections in the fabric of the building and gave out goody bags containing energy-saving light bulbs and power down packs, along with a leaflet offering tips on saving energy both at school and at home.

The visit proved a valuable educational experience for the children. Alex thought ‘it was incredible watching how the smoke stick was used to show how heat escapes through tiny holes like sockets’ and Carla commented: ‘It was great – we found out how to save energy’. Some of the children are even putting into practice what they have learnt and have started looking for ways of preventing heat loss at home; Connor explained: ‘I found a big draught coming through the keyhole at home so now we leave the key in.’
