Sevenoaks has the cleanest streets in England where 100% were assessed as clean.

Next with a 99.6% score was West Dorset followed by Hart in Hampshire with 99.2%.

The cleanest streets in Wales were in Carmarthenshire where 99.9% of the streets were assessed as clean.

In Scotland the areas with the cleanest streets were Eilean Siar, Dundee City, East Renfrewshire and Orkney Islands. The figures for the top 20 cleanest areas in the UK are shown below.

Haringey had the dirtiest streets in England where 40.1% were assessed as dirty. Next was Runnymede with 39% dirty followed by Havering at 38%. The dirtiest streets in Wales were in Blaenau Gwent where 24.3% were assessed as dirty.

The dirtiest streets in Scotland were in the City of Edinburgh with 36% of the streets dirty followed by South Ayrshire and Glasgow City with 33% dirty.

The figures for the 351 councils in England are set out in a PDF at the foot of this release. The figures for England are for the 12 months to 31 March 2007 and were supplied by the councils themselves to the Audit Commission.

The figures for Wales were published by the Local Government Data Unit Wales while the figures for Scotland were provided by the Audit Scotland.

All the figures were published as the Best Value Performance Indicator 2006/7 in the Audit Commission Local Government Compendium.

They were ranked by GMB from the cleanest to the dirtiest. The figures for the 22 councils in Wales and 30 councils in Scotland are set out in regional releases on the GMB website at the foot of this release.
