Hawtonville Clean up Hits a High Note! » Environment » 24dash.com

Over 25 Tenants, Councillors and Staff joined forces for a mass clean up of the Hawtonville Estate on Saturday 27th April.

Everything from baths and fridges, to TV’s and Pianos were disposed of in a four hour stint which culminated in a massive total of 20 tonnes being cleared from the estate. Approximately 50 fridge-freezers and cookers, 35 TV’s, and other white goods were removed.

Road sweepers and litter pickers were also in attendance and the targeted streets were left gleaming. Recycling advice was also given to residents where appropriate as the team progressed around the estate.

The event was organised by Newark and Sherwood Homes in partnership with Newark and Sherwood District Council, Notts County Council and Bailey Road Tenants and Residents Association and Newark Police.

District Councillor Stuart Wallace, who is also a Director of the Board of Newark and Sherwood Homes, stated that the event was “Excellent”.

“The community rallied round and supported this event. Everyone we spoke to were over the moon that we were able to take their unwanted items away. Even people passing were congratulating us on a job well done. The whole team has worked well today and showed what true partnership working can achieve.”

Tenant Mrs Wilson from Ash Road stated that it was “excellent that we were providing this service to the people of Hawtonville”.

Many residents felt that the event should be made regular and were keen to help by carrying items out to the waiting trucks.

Mrs Rawlin from Eton Ave felt the event was a “Brilliant Idea”, as did Lee Gilbey also from Eton Ave who provided the Piano for a photograph!

Mr Bennett from Bailey Road helped the team by collecting items from other residents and placing them in one place. “I think this is an excellent thing you are doing. It’s nice to see everyone working together” he stated.

Mr and Mrs Thompson from Bailey Road also felt the event should happen more often.
Councillor Girling from Notts County Council, who as part of the team helped shift the large amount of rubbish, stated “This is not the first time we have held this event but this is probably the largest amount we have cleared in one go. Hawtonville is a very important place to all who gave their time today, we want to see this community flourish and need the residents on our side to make it work. We will continue to provide innovative events such as this for the benefit of the community.”

Mary Smith, Chairperson of Bailey Road TRA stated “We are grateful to Newark and Sherwood Homes, and the Councillors from the estate who provided funding to ensure this event could go ahead. Thanks should go to everyone who attended to help shift the rubbish and in particular to Darren Epton and his team in the Cleansing Department for ensuring that the operation ran smoothly. We would also like to thank Councillor Crowe for providing the funding for the refreshments provided on the day to the workforce.”

Terry Bailey and Julie Madin are the Housing Officers who manage the Hawtonville Estate. Both felt the event went very well.

Terry stated “This has been a worthwhile event which has taken months to organise. All partners have played a significant role in ensuring that we could hold this event. We are grateful to local Council Members who provided funding and the excellent work and support given by Bailey Road Tenants and Residents Association. It is heartening to know that all agencies involved want the best for the people of Hawtonville”.
