North Yorkshire Hampsthwaite CE Primary head teacher, Andrew Phoenix, is one of seven lucky UK teachers to be selected to join 149 other educators from across the U.K., U.S. and Canada at the 2014 Discovery Educator Network Summer Institute (DENSI). A prestigious week-long professional development and networking event hosted by Discovery Education’s Discovery Educator Network (DEN) July 13-18 at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, U.S.A., the DENSI convenes educators for an immersive professional development event. Recently, Discovery Education acquired U.K. market leader Espresso Group Limited, a top provider of primary school digital education content.
During DENSI 2014, Andrew will participate in a number of seminars and hands-on workshops designed to support educators as they use the latest technologies to create authentic learning environments. In addition, the DENSI provides an opportunity for participants to connect and share resources, ideas and strategies for integrating digital resources into classroom instruction.
Commenting on the event, Andrew Phoenix, said “It’s a fantastic opportunity to work with a world-leading education community. I hope we’ll be able to forge trans-Atlantic links which will benefit our school and other schools in this area. I’m sure that the innovative ideas from DENSI will enable us to further enhance our curriculum with cutting-edge use of ICT.”
Participation in the DENSI is exclusive to educators recognized by Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, as STAR Discovery Educators. STAR Discovery Educators are active members of the DEN and proven leaders in transforming teaching and learning. The DEN is the largest and most active professional learning network of its kind. A global community of education professionals, the DEN connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events like the DENSI, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing and inspiration.
Commenting on the teachers’ attendance of DENSI, Kelli Campbell, Senior Vice President, Discovery Education, said, “As a participant in the DEN Summer Institute, Andrew has demonstrated his leadership and commitment to using the latest innovations in teaching and learning to enrich classroom experiences. Through his participation in this professional development event, Andrew will gain new skills and ideas to apply in his school and share with fellow teachers to accelerate pupil engagement and achievement and ensure pupils gain skills critical for college, careers and citizenship.”
Concluding, Lewis Bronze, Founder of Espresso, said, “The DEN is one of the most exciting innovations started by Discovery Education. I’m delighted that we have the opportunity to invite an initial group of British educators to attend the annual DEN Summer Institute in Nashville this year. I look forward to many thousands of our teacher partners connecting to the DEN community over the next few years.”
