mhs homes supports LGBT History Month

Published by Sarah Crowdy for MHS Homes in Education and also in Health, Housing

The mhs homes group is supporting Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender History Month which takes place every year in February. It celebrates the lives and achievements of the LGBT community and the history of gay rights and related civil rights movements. It is observed during February to coincide with a major celebration of the 2005 abolition of Section 28 which had the effect of prohibiting schools from discussing LGBT issues, counselling LGBT or questioning youth.

mhs homes is committed to the development of a culture in which fair treatment for all is normal practice across the whole organisation and is part of it’s daily work, by promoting equal opportunities and valuing diversity.

mhs homes is supporting LGBT History month and working with Stonewall to raise awareness amongst its staff and stakeholders. Events taking place include a presentation to staff by Colleen Humphrey Stonewall Director of Workplace. Other events include mhs homes staff and stakeholders learning about LGBT historical events between 1869 and 2005 and about the achievements of prominent LGBT members of our society and how they have overcome barriers.

Angela Evans, Head of Service Improvement said, “We are committed to ensuring that both our workforce and services to our customers are inclusive and any form of discrimination is eliminated. To help us achieve this mhs homes has established an Equality and Fairness Forum with our customers and stakeholders to ensure that our services are tailored to represent the views and needs of all our customers.”
