For mother and daughter Vanessa Churchward and Amy Jones, 2012 has turned out to be a super-successful year – and they’re putting it down to Soha Housing that it all started happening for them.
Vanessa of Didcot, who graduated from Oxford Brookes University with a degree in business management in the Summer, was the first person in her family to go in to higher education. A former hairdresser, Soha tenant Vanessa took English at Soha, then went on to do a study skills course which additionally helped her with using her computer. Asked what made the difference to her, she says: “The support of other people. From the Soha tenants who I started learning with, to my really encouraging tutors and very patient family, I couldn’t have done it without them.”
Now daughter Amy of East Hagbourne has a job, thanks to work-related opportunities she took part in at her landlord. Amy completed a City and Guilds Certificate in Customer Services, worked for two weeks as a paid market researcher and trained in copywriting and photography to contribute to the housing association’s Annual Report in 2012. In amongst all this, Amy has also squeezed in writing for Soha’s three-times-a-year magazine by tenants for tenants, Tenants’ Times.
