Northgate’s Contract Win Opens Windows to the Cloud for Hartsbrook E-ACT Free School

Published by Maria McMullan for Capita Managed IT Solutions in Education

Leading ICT services provider, Northgate Managed Services, has won a £220k educational contract to deliver the latest cloud-based technology solution to a new community-focused Free School in North London.

Hartsbrook E-ACT Free School in Tottenham is one of the first of a new concept of Free Schools which aims to set new standards in educational excellence by responding directly to the need of local communities.  Sponsored by E-ACT, Hartsbrook opened in temporary premises in September 2012, with 120 reception and Year 1 pupils and aims to increase pupil numbers to 420 before moving to its new school building in 2015.

Hartsbrook’s clear objective is to deliver innovative learning. Northgate has collaborated with E-ACT and Microsoft to develop a cloud-based solution which incorporates both Windows 8 and Office 365. As the first Free School in the UK to use Windows 8 operating system, Hartsbrook’s IT services are hosted in the Cloud, totally eliminating the need for server hardware or infrastructure on school premises.

The integrated technologies and remote management provided by Northgate offers the highest level of interactive learning across touchscreen desktops and mobile devices – enabling teachers to decide which are best suited to the different elements of the curriculum. This includes the use of games-based learning tools to help pupils develop key skills such as problem solving.

The cloud-based solution also ensures all pupils and staff have secure, remote access  to their individual email accounts, while documents and projects can be securely stored, shared and developed on line.  By implementing E-ACT’s Wide Area Network, Hartsbrook staff also benefit from the sharing of information and best practice across all E-ACT’s 29 Free Schools and academies.

As the school is growing year on year, the new technologies offer longer term cost efficiencies as they can easily be up-scaled in line with growing pupil numbers and requirements. The cloud solution provided by Northgate also offers significant cost savings in terms of technical support, maintenance and energy use.

Chris Wiseman, Sales Director, of Northgate Managed Services said: “The ethos of this project is to provide innovative cloud-based technologies which will not only enhance the learning experience for children today but which can also be easily and cost-effectively  adapted to meet the needs of future generations in the Tottenham area.”

School Principal, Sonia Mallick commented: “Hartsbrook is delighted to be part of this innovative project. Our whole community is looking forward to the benefits of this system and, with Northgate, Microsoft, E-ACT and Hartsbrook all working together, we are confident that our most important participants, the children, will gain a great deal and be supported in their learning.”

Akhlas Mohiuddin, IT Manager, of E-ACT added:

“The E-ACT Head Office ICT Team is extremely excited to be working closely with Northgate and Microsoft to provide Microsoft cloud based solution to the Hartsbrook E-ACT Free School. As the first school to have this system installed we look forward to seeing the new benefits in improved teaching and learning. E-ACT is dedicated to ensuring our students work with 21st Century technology to give them the best skills in which to enter the globalised world of work and high education. The cloud solution is secure and with nothing stored locally it means less ICT management cost for the school.”
