The Government’s School Access Initiative is pledging £96m pa to be made available up to the end of the 2010/11 school year to improve accessibility of mainstream schools to disabled pupils and those with special educational needs- including appropriate provision for personal hygiene. The new BS8300:2009 Inclusive Building Design, and Building Bulletin 102 Designing for Disabled Children & Children with Special Needs, specify changing facilities, whether in mainstream or special schools, should incorporate accessible showers.

Contour Showers, the UK’s leading manufacturer of shower solutions for the disabled, provides a ‘one stop shop’ for school specifiers to meet the legislative requirements. The company produces a range of ‘ eco-friendly’ wetfloor formers, level access showers, shower seats and the only thermostatic and pressure balancing mixer shower, thus covering options for wheelchair accessible showers for mainstream schools and bespoke shower facilities and hygiene rooms in special schools.

The wetfloor formers can be cut in any position for precise installation, or standard sizes abutted and watertight-sealed to form larger showering areas. They utilise ground-breaking plastic technology to overcome all the issues inherent with other floor formers, being light in weight yet durable, and easily cut to shape and size without impact on the former’s structural integrity and stability. Made in the UK from over 90% recycled plastic and itself being 100% recyclable, this type of floor former has a carbon footprint up to 70% lower than any similar product on the market.

All Contour level access shower trays feature Microban® anti-bacterial technology as a standard integral element The treatment, which lasts the lifetime of the tray, enhances infection control by creating a surface hostile to microbes and which inhibits growth of any bacteria- including MRSA and listeria monocytogenes, inbetween regular cleaning cycles. Contour is the only shower tray manufacturer to offer this type of lifetime protection.

The thermostatic and pressure balancing mixer shower features wing-shaped controls which enable effective use of the shower regardless of manual dexterity, and the unit is set to maintain a comfortable 38°F, to eliminate risk of scalding.

Kevin Bower, Contour Showers’ commercial director, comments, “We have 50 years’ experience in developing innovative showering solutions that enable ‘best practice’ criteria to be met whilst answering the needs of most. Those years of experience enable us to work in partnership with specifiers, to ensure the changing facilities meet all legislative demands whilst giving the client best value for money, and the optimum solution to the users’ requirements.”
