Local people in the South Ward of Weston-super-Mare will have increased access to productive green spaces as a result of funding from the Big Lottery Fund's Reaching Communities programme. The money, £180,000 over three years, will go towards expanding the award-winning 'Growing Together' project.
'Growing Together' is run in partnership with The Avon Wildlife Trust and the For All Healthy Living Centre across three sites in Weston-super-Mare. The project offers people the chance to gain an RHS qualification as well as take part in volunteering and training opportunities. In May, the project was named regional winner in the National Housing Federation's Community Impact Awards.
The funding will give this innovative project the chance to grow and develop with support from two new Project Workers.
Mary Morgan, Project Development Worker at the Alliance Homes Group, said: "This is our chance to realise the vision that local people have for this project and help make the local community aware of the beautiful natural world around them. Although statistically, this particular area is deprived and disadvantaged, it is also a vibrant, interesting, exciting, rewarding and diverse environment! The project aims to support volunteers and encourage many more to get out, start having fun and learning new skills."
