Shabana Mahmood MP joined WISH Midlands earlier this week at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Birmingham, for a one-off special appearance, before an ALL WOMEN audience made up from the affordable housing industry, including social housing providers, alongside female Councillors from across the region.
Speaking publically for the first time at this type of event, Shabana Mahmood MP took questions from the audience and provided an insight into how she got involved in politics and how she became an MP in an environment where women are still significantly in the minority. She highlighted some of her many achievements along the way, and outlined her vision for the future the lessons she has learnt about how to break through in the political world.
WISH is a unique group for women working in the affordable housing sector. WISH endeavours to address gender equality issues and recognise the importance of supporting women in the sector throughout their careers. WISH offers a stronger voice for women in the affordable housing industry, providing assistance with their personal and professional development, as well as enabling them to have a greater impact on meeting the needs of disadvantaged communities.
An Audience with Shabana Mahmood MP is part of WISH Midlands’ programme of activities for the forthcoming year. All events provide interesting opportunities for women to develop their networks and skills. This includes seminars where successful role models including a variety of MPs and business leaders, will be sharing their knowledge and expertise, as well as providing tips on how best to promote themselves, their organisation and the industry.
Shabana Mahmood MP said, ‘Since Parliament granted universal suffrage, much has been achieved by women via the Feminist Movement and organisations such as Emily’s List and the Fawcett Society. But gender inequality is still an issue in this country, despite some high profile women, only one in five MPs are women.
‘As well as providing support for women throughout their careers, WISH offers a strong, collective voice for women in the affordable housing sector. I was delighted to join WISH Midlands to take questions from the floor and share some of the high points in my career, as I believe by working together we can achieve so much more, and it is our responsibility to be the change we wish to see in the world.’
Ann Rivera, Chair of WISH Midlands said, ‘On behalf of WISH Midlands, it was a great honour for Shabana Mahmood MP to join us and provide an insight into how she got involved in politics, an environment where women are still significantly in the minority. An Oxford graduate and barrister, Birmingham born Shabana was educated in her own constituency, she represents Ladywood, one of the most deprived wards in the UK. Our industry supports individuals and communities from disadvantaged backgrounds, many of whom are vulnerable. WISH was created to give women in the sector a greater voice and we work collaboratively with a range of organisations to ensure we can achieve this. Shabana Mahmood MP is an excellent role model for all women.
