Residents on a Southampton estate are about to receive Premier League coaching - just in time for the World Cup.
After several years of hard work, Southampton City Council’s housing team celebrated the official launch of a £150,000 multi-use games area in the St Mary’s area.
Southampton Football Club chairman Ralph Krueger and defender José Fonte were among the crowd who gathered to officially open the new facility, the Saints Hub.
The Saints Hub has been funded by the Saints Foundation (Southampton FC's charitable arm) and the Premier League Community Facility Fund.
The facility gives locals the chance to participate in sport in a safe environment, and the opportunity to benefit from some expert coaching.
David Bruce lives on Golden Grove estate and has been involved in the project from the start. He said: “It’s taken over six years and a lot of hard work; so the whole community is delighted to see it finally open. We’ve had to apply for funding, find a site, work with the school and overcome a lot of red tape including planning and even archaeology issues to get the games area developed. A huge thank you to everyone involved. We’ve done it!”
