Everybody needs good neighbours

A Birmingham resident who gave a neighbour’s home a spring clean and spruced up their garden while they were seriously ill in hospital, has been recognised by a local housing provider.
Syeda Hussain, from Smethwick, Birmingham, was one of the winners of Circle Housing Mercian’s first ever Good Neighbours Awards, which celebrates small but valuable acts of kindness in the community.
Neighbour Surjeet Kaur said: “She supported me a lot when I was suffering with illness – I was in hospital for quite a long time and she looked after me and my children. Thank goodness I have such a good neighbour.”
Syeda, 39, who has lived next to Sujeet for over 10 years, said: “Neighbours are like family, you need to stick together and help sort out any problems for each other. I am very happy to have been nominated for this award.”
Vicky Marshall, Circle Housing Mercian’s Customer Involvement Manager said, “It’s been great to hear some heart-warming stories about the people in our communities and we are very pleased to give them the recognition they deserve.
“It was fantastic to see so many entries in our first year of the Good Neighbour Awards and I hope to see even more next year.”
Circle Housing Mercian earlier in the year invited residents to nominate people who had made a difference to their neighbourhoods. Three winners each received £100 of high street vouchers donated by sponsors First Call, at a special event held at Circle Housing Mercian’s head office in Aston.
