An 84-year-old social housing tenant who has battled cancer put her best foot forward to raise money for charity.

Inspirational Janet Lawson, from Broughton in Salford, was diagnosed with cancer of the lymph nodes in her neck in 2010 and since then has raised hundreds of pounds for charities close to her heart.

In her latest fundraising feat Janet, who is now in her fourth year of remission, took part in a sponsored dog walk around Heaton Park and raised £117 for St Ann’s Hospice.

Janet, who is a Salix Homes’ tenant, completed the 1.5mile challenge while using her mobility shopping trolley for support and managed to finish the trek in an impressive two hours.

The grandmother-of-four was joined by her daughter Janet, son-in-law Christopher, granddaughter Joanne and their dog Lucy.

Janet said: “I love walking, but I didn’t think it’d be quite so hilly! It was very cold, but you just have to keep going and I love being outdoors anyway. My legs weren’t even aching the next day, but I always make sure I do my leg exercises every morning to keep going.”

Salix Homes, which manages 8,500 homes across Central Salford, has put Janet forward for Salford City Council’s Spirit of Salford campaign – which recognises proud Salfordians who show the city’s true spirit.

Every year on her birthday and at Christmas Janet asks friends and family to donate to her chosen charity instead of buying her gifts. Over the years she has raised money for Help for Heroes, animal charities and The Christie Hospital, where she received her cancer treatment.

She said: “I believe in giving back. When I was treated at The Christie they were all fantastic and I just think they have given me my life back so now I want to give to someone else. Every morning when I wake up I thank God that I’ve got another day.”

Cath Walton, community involvement and new initiatives officer at Salix Homes, said: “Janet is a very proud Salfordian and has got the real ‘Spirit of Salford’.

“Despite battling cancer herself, she still soldiers on and nothing ever fazes her. She gets involved in all the activities we organise at Rialto Gardens and does a wonderful job helping to maintain the community garden.

“She is a truly remarkable lady and an inspiration to us all.”
