Sanctuary Housing is working in partnership with Locality to support five trainees in a year-long contract, to benefit the local community and its residents.

Locality, a national network for community-led organisations, has rolled out its Community Organisers Programme in Torbay. The programme is all about inspiring community action within neighbourhoods by training, supporting and developing a number of trainee community organisers. The newly-appointed community organisers will fulfil the neighbourhood’s needs with support and guidance from Sanctuary Housing.

Armed with their new skillset, organisers will take a hands-on approach to listening to the concerns and aspirations of people in the local area, build relationships and help people take action themselves on the local issues that matter to them. The main aim of the programme is to develop a collective power to act together for the common good of the whole community, including Sanctuary residents.

The organisers will receive intensive training and mentoring advice from Sanctuary Housing and Locality. The five new trainees will be introduced to local residents and groups in the coming weeks.

Sanctuary secured the partnership when its application was chosen by Locality’s selection panel. The national housing provider ticked all of the boxes due to its strong ties within the community and their understanding of local residents’ needs.

Naomi Diamond, development manager at Locality, said: “We are very excited to be working with Sanctuary Housing over the coming year. The Community Organisers Programme not only offers great opportunities for the five trainees but also for the host.

“We chose Sanctuary as a host because of its strong local connections and commitment to the local community. We look forward to working with the five trainee organisers to begin inspiring action and new projects in the local area.”

Alison Kenny, Sanctuary’s community development manager, continued: “We are over the moon to have won the application with Locality. It’s a fantastic learning exercise for the five new trainees and also an invaluable asset to our workforce.”

Locality is a national network of over 700 community-led organisations and 200 associate partners, acting as a support network for members via a range of projects. For more information, please visit
