Youngsters from across Torbay can get involved in some after-school fun and put their football skills to the test at exciting sports sessions which kicked-off in their local community this week.

Delivered by Sanctuary Housing in partnership with Torquay United Football in the Community and Westward Housing, the training sessions are open to young residents, male or female, aged 12 or under living in Torbay.

Local young people are invited to come along to any of the weekly sessions which take place on Tuesdays at the Multi-Use Games Arena (MUGA) in Great Parks, Paignton, from 3.30-5pm until 1 April 2014. Each session can be paid for on the day and costs only £2 per participant.

The 11-week programme, run by professional coaches, is giving youngsters the opportunity to develop their footballing skills, improve fitness and health, increase confidence and self esteem, and is allowing them to interact and engage with other members of the local community in a positive way.

The Torbay coaching forms part of a country-wide initiative from Sanctuary Housing which is seeing youngsters across England get fit and active as they get involved in a range of physical and creative activities. The Sanctuary in Sport programme also gives participants the chance to move into educational and training opportunities.

Frank Prince, community manager at Torquay United Football in the Community, said: “We joined forces with Sanctuary and Westward Housing last year to bring football to the residents of Torbay, and it’s really marvellous that we’ve been able to do it again.

“The coaching is set to be really exciting and I’d encourage youngsters across the Bay to come along and join in the fun.”
