Residents from Levenot Close retirement living scheme in Banbury are enjoying a fit and healthy start to the New Year thanks to a unique fitness craze designed for the elderly.

Sanctuary Housing has provided funding for seated exercise classes at the scheme which are designed to improve the physical and mental wellbeing of residents while bringing them together as a community.

The leading housing and care provider has teamed up with staff at the scheme to run the chair-based classes, which include a range of stretches and exercises to 60s and 70s music.

The fitness classes are a continuation of some taster sessions run at the scheme last year.

Tina Flint, Sanctuary’s Local Service Manager in Banbury, said: “With residents living in their separate homes it is important that they do not become isolated and remain social with the community. These classes are the perfect opportunity for them to not only meet others but to remain fit and healthy whilst having fun at the same time.”

Harjinder Lota, Sanctuary Housing’s head of local partnerships, added: “This is a great opportunity for our residents to get involved with an activity that will benefit both their health and wellbeing, as well as providing them with an opportunity to interact with the rest of their community.”

Held every Monday at 10am, the class takes place at the Levenot Close common room. After 45 minutes of exercise residents are invited to socialise and help themselves to a drink and healthy snack.

The funding for the classes has come through Sanctuary’s Cherish Cherwell Fund which offers grants in support of activities and projects that will make a real difference to the lives of people across the district.
