Kier is cementing its position as a firm supporter of service leavers, by helping place ex-forces members in jobs through its gas training programme, including a former British Army engineer at Gosport.

Former Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineer Sean Doyle took redundancy from the British Army due to his son’s severe disability. In September he enrolled on Kier’s gas training programme, which provides training for ex-forces personnel, local contractors and new gas technicians. As part of his course he completed an eight-week work placement with Kier in Gosport, where he has now been offered a fixed-term position.

Commenting on his placement, Doyle said: “After leaving the British Army, I had wondered where my future would lie. There were many companies out there, but it was Kier’s excellent course information booklet that attracted me, and the guaranteed work placement it offered was key to my decision. It offers all the necessary experience to qualify from experienced engineers on site to the required theory training in the training centre.”

Kier regional managing director, David Mawson, added: “At Kier, we are proud of our gas assessment programme, which has already trained more than 100 candidates at our Gas Training Centre based in North Tyneside. Having reservists within our training team and years of experience of helping service leavers, we are perfectly positioned to provide support and advice for trainees, as well as the practical skills and experience required for their future careers.”

Kier began its contract with Gosport Borough Council in 2011 to deliver repairs and maintenance to Gosport’s social housing. Since the contract began, Kier has worked with the council to repair and maintain more than 3,200 properties throughout the borough, carrying out 8,000 repairs per year.
