An important piece of public art running close to the iconic River Tyne has been transformed with colour and long-lasting protection from Crown Paints.

The Ribbon Railings are a well-known landmark in the North East, stretching along the Askew Road to Gateshead and Newcastle, and seen by hundreds of thousands of motorists using the route.

Stretching approximately one quarter of a mile, the railings were erected in 2002 under a collaboration between Gateshead Council’s landscape architects and Alan Dawson Associates.

Made from galvanised steel and rising to a height of 1.4 metres, they were inspired by ribbons floating in the wind, visually flowing through planting along the route, whilst physically forming a barrier along the top of the wall.

Years after they were last painted, the railings are now back to pristine condition, with Crown Trade Protective Coatings High Performance Gloss for Metal applied throughout the entire display.

The work was carried out by Bell Group, who are trade partners of Crown Paints and have a long-standing working relationship with Gateshead Council involving a variety of projects.

The challenge was to produce a high quality finish along an extremely busy stretch of road using a variety of shades, with the colour feathered in to create a flowing effect.

Gateshead Council first became involved with art in the environment in the early 1980s. By 1986 a Public Art Programme had been established, which has since gained national and international recognition, receiving a succession of prestigious awards.

During the programme’s 25-year history, Gateshead Council has commissioned over 80 works of art, ranging from the Ribbon Railings through to one of the most well-known public artworks in Britain, ‘Angel of the North.’

Gateshead Council’s Public Art Curator, Anna Pepperall, said: “The railings are there to deter people from accessing the road from the bank, and rather than common rail fencing we wanted something creative and artistic.

“This is a prominent location, on a busy arterial road and the railings are unique in the country.

“They add something colourful to the location, in an area that you’d not expect to see it. Now with the paint project completed they look stunning and have the necessary protection for the long term.”

Simon Lewis, a Building Surveyor at Gateshead Council, oversaw the painting project. He said: “We had a clear brief, to create a high impact, and visible effect, which would ensure longevity. We brought Crown Paints in to find the best solution, and are very pleased with the end result delivered by Bell Group.”

The Crown Trade Protective Coatings High Performance Gloss for Metal system protects against rust and offers a durable and long lasting finish for all metalwork, particularly structural steelwork, walkways, railings, gates and shutters.

The gloss topcoat is available in black and white, as well as 1,800 tints available to order, and will protect the railings for up to 10 years. The integrity of the colours will also be maintained for the long-term due to the UV resistant formulation of the system.

David Hope, Specification Sales Manager for Crown Paints said: “We are delighted to have played a part in this project.

“The Ribbon Railings are seen by thousands of people every day and we hope the colours will give many years enjoyment.”
